Migratory Birds Ceramic Art Residency — Artist Talk, Jingdezhen

As part of the Migratory Birds Ceramic Art Residency, Gordon Cheung will present a talk on his evolving engagement with porcelain in Jingdezhen—widely regarded as the historic “Capital of Porcelain.”

Building on his Scholar Rock sculptures, this new body of work extends into ceramic processes that merge traditional craft with emerging technologies. The presentation will trace his use of advanced porcelain powder, conventional FDM 3D printing, and casting from resin-printed moulds, reflecting a hybrid approach that bridges analogue and digital production.

Through these methods, Cheung continues his exploration of meditative focal points between nature and civilisation—set against the broader context of the digital age and its shifting geopolitical and economic landscapes. The talk situates this work within a longer trajectory of inquiry into cycles of growth and decline, drawing parallels between material transformation and the rise and fall of empires.
