This year’s Newhaven Open Call features an exhibition within an exhibition. Hidden within this democratic celebration of local creativity are 12 additional artworks, selected to interact, cohere, and take root within the Open Call’s environment. These sculptures, prints, and paintings are fully integrated with the other works that make up the broader Open Call exhibition. Camouflaged and concealed, this show might never fully reveal itself to its audience, prompting thought-provoking questions about how cultural artifacts communicate with us and add value to their surroundings.

Inspired by artist curators such as Goshka Macuga and Ricci Albenda’s mashup Answer Yes, No or Don’t Know (1999) at Andrew Kreps Gallery, Seed Bomb deliberately concatenates different value systems of artworks and exhibition formats. The title of this show alludes to the strategic yet irregular dispersal of matter. Each of the chosen artists uniquely mutates and transforms matter into hybrid objects, ranging from high-visibility jackets into animal skins and Financial Times newspapers into stone.

Taking a cue from the work of John Walter, Seed Bomb might be seen as a study in memetics. The artworks in Seed Bomb could be viewed as metonymic for units of cultural transmission, dispersed to interact, mutate, be copied, and further remixed within the Newhaven Open Call, ensuring that both shows positively retain each other so that neither can be as easily forgotten.

Newhaven Art Projects is an artist led, not for profit organization that promotes the visual art and brings people together through art.
