Jerwood Contemporary Painters
20 Sep - 08 Nov 2008
This is the second Jerwood Contemporary Painters
exhibition, which focuses on emerging UK artists, and was
selected this year by Jason Brooks, Professor Stephen Farthing,
RA, and Professor AnitaTaylor. Stephen Farthing commented:
“Clearly it is important for both audience and the judges
to take a structured look from time to time at the changes
that are taking place in that wonderfully traditional activity
called Painting. This exhibition we hope does just that.”
Richard Dyer, from the catalogue essay:
‘When we look at the work of painters in this exhibition,
such as Elinor Evans and Chris Smith, it becomes apparent
why painting is still such a strong force even in the light
of thirty years or more of installation, performance, video
and now internet based practice. A painting holds the trace
of the painter’s ‘touch’, its facture is
the imprint of the intention of the artist, the surface traps
the haptic resonance of the act of the artist making their
mark in a way that no other medium is capable of.That is why
painting will continue to be the essential verb in the grammar
of contemporary art practice.”
The works selected for this exhibition are by: Johann Andersson,Varda
Caivano, Gordon Cheung, Ross Chisholm , Simon Collins, Tom
Crawford, Matthew Draper, Elinor Evans, Andrew Griffiths,
Nadia Hebson, Gunther Herbst, Sally Kindberg, Sophie Lascelles,
Andrea Medjesi-Jones, Yuko Nasu, Alicia Paz, Michael Samuels,
